Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition or HCCI engines, have been in development by several automakers hoping to combine the best of both gasoline and diesel engines. Most of the prototypes up to this point still retained spark plugs, and had a dual-mode function operating without spark plugs during moderate and low-load conditions, and switching to spark ignition at wide-open-throttle. The Hyundai GDCI engine has no spark plugs whatsoever, relying on a compound supercharger and turbo, along with unique cam timing to draw more heat into the combustion chambers to allow for sparkless ignition of gasoline. The 1.8-liter engine is currently producing around 180 hp in testing.

HCCIエンジンは今まで多くのメーカーでガソリンとディーゼルエンジンの長所のみを組み合わせることで思われて開発されて来た. 今までの大部分のプロトタイプは相変らず火点しプラグが設置されているのに, 中・低負荷状態では火点しプラグなしに作動して, スロットル開放時には火点しプラグを使う. 一方 GDCIエンジンは火点しプラグが全くないのに, これはスーパーチャージャーとターボチャージャーの組合と ユニークなカムタイミング調節によって多い熱を燃焼室で引っぱることができて火点しプラグに寄り掛からなくても良いようになったことによるのだ. 現在製作中の 1.8リットルエンジンは実験で 180hp 程度を出している.

実際に Mercedes-Benzのガソリン圧縮着火エンジンである DiesOtto, Volkswagenの CCSなどは
スロットル開放の時には相変らず火点しプラグに寄り掛かると言います.

これと違って, Hyundai GDCI エンジンは 最初で圧縮着火だけでの駆動ができるようにしたと.

以前のインタビューでの「技術でリーダーになる」という自信あふれる発言の根拠はこれでしたね.

HCCI 엔진은 지금까지 많은 메이커로 가솔린과 디젤 엔진의 장점만을 조합하는 것으로 생각되어 개발되어 왔다. 지금까지의 대부분의 프로토 타입은 변함없이 점화 플러그가 설치되어 있는데, 중·저부하 상태에서는 점화 플러그없이 작동하고, 스로틀 개방시에는 점화 플러그를 사용한다. 한편 GDCI 엔진은 점화 플러그가 전혀 없는데, 이것은 슈퍼차저와 터보차저의 조합과 독특한 캠 타이밍 조절에 의해서 많은 열을 연소실로 끌 수 있어 점화 플러그에 들러 걸리지 않아도 좋게 된 것에 의한 것이다. 현재 제작중의 1.8리터 엔진은 실험으로 180hp 정도를 내고 있다.
